Nest vs Honeywell Learning Thermostat | Comparison For 2018

Nest vs Honeywell Learning Thermostat

The Nest Learning Thermostat and the Honeywell RTH9580WF are two of the most popular smart thermostats on the market today. Both cost about the same amount, and they both use WiFi to allow for remote access and control of your home’s temperature. While both offer similar functionality, the Nest has some advantages over the Honeywell.

Minimalist Design

Ultimately, your thermostat has one job: to control the temperature of your home. The Nest takes this simple idea and runs with it. Simply turn the outer ring to select an option or adjust the temperature, and push the whole thermostat in to confirm each selection. It’s a sleek but simple and stylish design.

The Honeywell RTH9580WF, on the other hand, features a more complex user interface. It’s much larger than the Nest, rectangular in shape and uses a touchscreen to make selections.

To put it simply: the Honeywell thermostat is big, bulky and at times, more complex to use.

Effortless Learning

The Nest truly is a smart thermostat, and it learns your routine. If you have a habit of setting the temperature to 72 each morning, Nest will learn this behavior and start setting it to that temperature automatically at the same time each morning.

Nest will also detect when you’re away from home, and automatically adjust your home’s temperature to save you energy and money. How does it know that you’re away from home? It uses internal motion sensors to detect movement in your home.

It took about a week for my Nest to learn my routine, but now, it automatically adjusts the temperature for me right when I need it most. Nest will continue learning for as long as you use it, so it will constantly be adjusting its behavior to suit your personal preferences.

The Honeywell RTH9580WF doesn’t offer the same learning features. It learns your home’s WiFi system – not your behavior.

Like regular programmable thermostats, you need to input your schedule manually to enjoy automatic temperature adjustments. The Honeywell model does not have motion sensors either, so you’ll need to lower the temperature yourself if you leave home unexpectedly.

Energy-Saving Leaf Badges

Only the Nest thermostat rewards its users with a leaf badge for cutting back on energy usage. A small leaf icon appears on the Nest’s interface whenever you choose energy-efficient temperatures.

I don’t know about you, but my energy bill is my second highest bill next to my mortgage. That’s why I strive to keep that little leaf icon glowing all the time.

It lets me know that I’m saving money and cutting back on my energy usage each and every day. I get satisfaction in seeing all the leaves I’ve collected in my monthly energy usage report.

The Honeywell WiFi thermostat doesn’t offer a green leaf badge that rewards you for making smart energy choices. Aside from your monthly energy bill, you really have no way of knowing which temperatures are the most energy efficient and save you the most money.

Multiple Time Periods

With the Nest Learning Thermostat, you can schedule multiple time periods each day. If you’re in and out of the house a lot during the day, this feature can be especially useful.

I come home for lunch each day, so I can schedule the thermostat to either raise or lower the temperature just before I get home. Once I leave, I can either let the Nest determine that I’m “away,” or I can create a new schedule that reduces energy usage after I leave.

Honeywell also lets you create multiple schedules, but you’re limited to just four.

Helpful Energy Usage Reports

The Nest thermostat can help you save even more money on your energy bills by providing you with helpful energy usage reports.

While it may sound trivial, the monthly report is one of my favorite features because it lets me know how many hours my system was running and how many leaves I earned. Nest will even compare your energy usage to other Nest users, so you can see just how energy efficient you are.

Monthly reports is something that Honeywell doesn’t offer.

Nest vs Honeywell Learning Thermostat – Conclusion

While the Honeywell RTH9580WF is an excellent smart thermostat, the Nest Learning Thermostat – 2nd Generation T200577 offers a number of great features that seem to be lacking in the Honeywell model.

From multiple schedules to behavior learning and motion sensors that detect when you’re away, the Nest is an overall more sophisticated and convenient WiFi thermostat.
