Emerson 1F83C-11NP Conventional (1H/1C) Non-Programmable Thermostat

Are you looking for a great deal on a new thermostat?  You've come to the right place. There are plenty on the market to choose from, so where do you start looking? How do you know that you're getting a quality product that won't die on you in a few months?

Just because you’re operating on a limited budget, it doesn’t mean that you want to buy junk. So, we’ve got a suggestion for you – the Emerson 1F83C-11NP.

Why Choose Emerson?

We've stuck with Emerson because they're one of the top brands available today. They've been in the business for more than a hundred years. Open any other HVAC system, and you'll likely find Emerson made at least some of the parts.

Easy to Install

This model is so easy to install that it almost installs itself. Even if you've never installed one before, you'll find it simple enough. The company tells you how to do this step by step. This model comes with a backplate and a built-in level to make placing it relatively easy.

Once it’s wired in, setting it up is simple using the simple menu. If you know what you’re doing, and have a C-wire, you can do away with the batteries altogether.

Large Display

The display is large and easy to read. The screen is backlit, and so it will be easy to see even in the dark. Its simple design makes it easy to locate the buttons that you'll need to use to make adjustments.

The display can be locked to prevent kiddies from tampering with it.

It’s Compatible with a Wide Range of Systems

This model is wired into your existing system directly, so there's no need to get an electrician in. It's compatible with:

  • Conventional: You can use this with a traditional system with 1 stage of cooling and heating
  • Heat Pump: Again, heat pumps will work as long as there’s 1 stage of cooling and heating
  • A Plain Heating System
  • A Plain Cooling System
  • Electric, Oil, Gas
  • 3-Wire systems
  • Millivolt

It will not work with:

  • Line voltage like baseboard heating systems
  • Serial protocols systems
  • Proprietary systems
  • Communicating systems

Warranty

The limited warranty covers you for either a year after installation or three years after manufacture with a "repair or replace" warranty. That means that you'll need to send a faulty unit back. If the unit is repairable, the company will repair it. If not, you'll get a new one to replace it.

Standard Footprint

The thermostats in this series share the same footprint. That means that your next unit will cover the same surface area as the previous one.

Highly Accurate

Remember how we said that being on a limited budget didn't mean you had to buy junk? This thermostat has been made to be accurate to within one degree. You might not get a range of different features here, but accuracy is guaranteed.

With its precision temperature accuracy of 1 degree, this thermostat gives you the option of keeping your home temperatures within one degree of where you set it. It’s time to start expecting more from your thermostat.

Simple Unit

If you want a straightforward thermostat without a bunch of features, you’ll never use, this is it. Let's face it, how many features do you need when it comes to your thermostat?

Its straightforward operation makes it simple for anyone to use. So, you won’t need to call your kids to come and help you.

One feature that this unit does have is the ability to change the cooling cycle rate. This ability doesn't affect the unit's performance. What it will do, though, is to save the compressor from running through unnecessary cycles.

This model is not programmable, and that's one of the reasons that it's so much cheaper than other Emerson models. Again, you’re sacrificing some features to save a fair amount of money.

Top Features

  • Large display, backlit to make it easier to read
  • Comes with terminals that can be plugged in, a backplate, and a level indicator to make it easier to install
  • Temperature limits
  • Backlit button
  • Lockable keypad
  • Duel fuel comes standard – you won’t need sensors
  • Simple to use – not programmable

Specifications

  • Weight is 9 ounces
  • You’ll need 2 AA batteries (included)
  • Comes in white
  • Battery-powered but can be rigged to run on electricity (Keep in mind this would void your warranty)

Any Cons?

The primary concern that we have here is the placement of the menu button. It might look good aesthetically where it is, but it's too close to your increase and decrease buttons. That means that you might push it easily by accident.

If you do, you’ll have to whack the button a few times to get it back to where it should be. It’s a little annoying, especially if you have big fingers, but it’s not a deal-breaker.

Conclusion

Overall, this is a very basic thermostat, so don't expect a bunch of cool features. That said, you're paying a very reasonable price, so does it matter? Simplicity can be a selling feature. Not all of us have a kid on hand to help us figure it out.

While Emerson skimped on features, they didn't skimp on quality. This model is a highly accurate piece of machinery. It will keep the temperature within one degree of your desired temperature.

It’s simple to install –  full instructions are included. Operating the unit is easy. If you do run into problems, you can always call the customer service line for advice.

Emerson has you covered for aftersales service. If you need advice with installation, using the unit, or if it's not working as it should, you can contact the company. Emerson's warranty also covers you for a year after installation.
