Honeywell RTH6580WF Review 2018: 7-Day Programming for the Perfect Temperature

The This Model markets itself as a WiFi unit that offers advanced programming, and since it’s priced under $100, we thought that it would be a good model to try and review.

And we’ll be honest: it’s an older model by Honeywell.

If you’re looking for an advanced interface, the Honeywell Smart is an upgrade over this model – and it comes at a much higher cost.

But that doesn’t mean that this WiFi thermostat isn’t a great model. It’s a great thermostat overall, and for the price, it’s an exceptional unit. Let’s take a look at the features to see what this model has to offer before going deeper into our review.

Honeywell RTH6580WF Review

Honeywell starts with installation ease. When you go to install a new unit, you’ll find that more often than not, you’ll need to make adjustments to your wiring.

This is a difficult task for a lot of homeowners, which is why they often hire someone to install the unit for them, or they purchase an exact replacement model so that installation is easy.

This unit needs to use a C-Wire, which allows it to be a universal unit.

But if you don’t have a C-wire, Honeywell comes to the rescue. The company offers a variety of installation videos online, which allows you to install your thermostat without needing the help of a professional.

Oftentimes, you’re able to substitute the G-Wire for the C-Wire, which is exactly what the Honeywell video shows you how to do.

Do keep in mind that you’ll lose some functionality if the C-Wire isn’t present, even though there is a “hack” to make the unit work.

What function will you be missing?

The fan only option. This isn’t something that people use often (do they ever?), so it’s not a big issue.

Connecting to the WiFi setting is a little tedious.

  • The unit has a hard time connecting to the WiFi, but once it’s properly connected, the issue is remedied.
  • Honeywell does require you to go through a third-party website, which has its own privacy policy that you’ll want to view before accepting.

7-Day Programming

The Honeywell programmable thermostat offers 7-day programming. While this unit may not be “smart” like other units, it is able to be programmed through the unit’s WiFi interface.

Maybe on Monday you go to work earlier, so the heat doesn’t need to be on at 7am.

And on Thursday when you have to work double shifts, you can choose to delay the unit’s heating or cooling. The unit can also kick on early in the morning to ensure you wake up to a warm home.

What’s really impressive is that the unit is pre-programmed for energy savings.

But you also have the option of using four periods per day that can be programmed. For example, you can choose to put the heat on 72 on the morning setting and down to 65 on the daytime setting, 72 on the evening setting, and 70 on the night setting before you go to bed.

These four periods can be programmed for every day of the week.

Energy Savings

The majority of a person’s energy bill is comprised of their heating and cooling bill. It takes a lot of energy to run an HVAC system.

When programmed properly, Honeywell has found that users can save as much as 33% on their energy bills.

This is an impressive savings.

And even some of the newer models can’t offer the same level of energy savings as this unit. The unit itself can also show you the local weather report. The free app will let users monitor the weather, too, which is a nice added feature.

Since you can program the unit remotely, you can also adjust the system’s temperature when you’re not at home. You can adjust the temperature via:

  • An app
  • A computer

Temperature Remembering

The unit doesn’t require you to use WiFi at all times to remember the settings. If your Internet goes down, the unit will keep using the schedule that it remembers. So, the unit won’t need to be connected to the WiFi all the time.

And this is a great feature and function because a lot of people assume that the unit is connected to the Internet and uses some sort of Internet database at all times.

But this isn’t true. So, even without the Internet, the unit will work fine.

When the electric goes off, the unit will also shut down. This happens to every thermostat on the market except for the ones with battery options. But there still isn’t a way to keep the HVAC system on without electric.

The great thing is that when the electricity comes back on, the unit will continue with its normal schedule.

pros

cons

  • Easy installation and videos to help if there are any problems
  • The unit can be highly programmed.
  • Easy controls are used to operate the unit.
  • App function allows you to change the settings via the Internet or an app.
  • The unit’s interface is dated.
  • No advanced sensor options.

This is an older thermostat, so the interface isn’t as fancy as some of the top thermostats on the market.

It’s an older interface with a green backlit display, so it’s not that appealing. But this isn’t much of a concern as long as the unit works well, and it does.

The RTH6580WF is an affordable upgrade over conventional thermostats that offer very little in terms of functionality and programming. One of the legacy units from Honeywell, this unit isn’t as advanced as some of the others we’ve reviewed, but when you’re able to set four temperatures for each day of the week, it’s still quite customizable.

And you’ll save a lot of money on your energy bills, too.

If you’re in the market for an affordable, programmable thermostat, this is a great option for you.
